Blood donation
As a blood donor, you donate blood, which is separated into individual components after your donation.
Red blood cells, platelets, and plasma are used to treat patients. White blood cells are not used for patients, but they are valuable for diagnostics and research. Separating and administering components individually reduces the risk of unwanted side effects and allows for the precise use of the blood component that is needed.
What blood is used for
From blood transfusions for people with cancer to saving someone after a car accident. And from developing medicines to keeping a premature baby alive. With your blood, we save and improve lives.
Donating blood takes just a few hours a year
Men can donate blood up to 5 times a year. Women up to 3 times. The actual blood collection takes about 10 minutes. During your appointment, we ask medical questions, measure things like your blood pressure, and afterward, you can eat and drink something in the donor café. You’ll be out again in about an hour.
You’ll receive a call-up when your blood is needed
When your blood is needed, you’ll receive a call-up by email. How often we contact you depends on your blood type and the demand from hospitals. During your first appointment, we take a blood sample to determine your blood type. You can easily schedule appointments online. In your personal MijnSanquin account, you can view and adjust your appointments, check your personal details, and see your blood pressure, hemoglobin levels, and donation history.
