Although often seen as a hindrance, gene expression noise can promote cellular diversification in both healthy and diseased contexts. Here, we show how noise drives fate transitions in mouse embryonic stem cells and identify SON, a protein involved in nuclear speckle formation, as a noise regulator whose effects shape cell fate decisions.
