Sanquin Research Fund
Most people know Sanquin from the Blood Bank, where donors give blood or plasma to help treat patients. But Sanquin does more than that. More than 200 researchers work daily to study blood and blood-related diseases, developing new medicines and blood products for patients around the world. Incredible work is being done—but there is still so much more to achieve. That’s why the Sanquin Research Fund was established. This fund raises money to conduct life-saving research.

Sanquin—together with donors—wants to save as many lives as possible or improve the quality of life for patients. That’s why we are always searching for new or better ways to treat patients with blood-related conditions.

Research is in our blood
Sanquin Research Fund is an independent fund that collects money from businesses and individuals who want to contribute to a world where fewer people fall ill or need blood products. With the funds collected, Sanquin Research Fund finances research conducted by Sanquin researchers in four key areas: saving lives with Big Data, customized blood for everyone, curing people indefinitely, and treating cancer with blood.
Our dreams

Saving lives with Big Data
Large-scale analysis of blood enables us to identify new or emerging diseases at an early stage, take action quickly and avoid expensive treatments or extra pressure on healthcare.

Customized blood for everyone
Patients who regularly need blood transfusions risk the blood will be rejected by the immune system. We succeeded in culturing blood in the lab that is no longer different from their own blood.

Curing people indefinitely
Some patients suffer from a hereditary condition that seriously disrupts the production of blood cells. We are developing technologies that can repair genetic defects in bloodforming stem cells.

Treat cancer with blood
By growing immune cells in the lab and then injecting them into the patient, in some of the cases a tumor can disappear with a hitherto untreatable form of cancer.
