Adam W. Barb earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in plant sciences at Purdue University and North Carolina State University in 2000 and 2002, respectively. He earned a Ph.D. at Duke University in the Department of Biochemistry studying structure/function relationships of enzymes in 2008. Dr. Barb was an NIH postdoctoral fellow at the University of Georgia. Dr. Barb founded his own lab in 2012 at Iowa State University and was subsequently awarded the ASBMB Herbert Tabor Young Investigator Award for studies defining the structural role of antibody glycosylation in receptor interactions. Dr. Barb moved back to the University of Georgia to join the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2019, rising to the rank of Professor in 2023 and becoming Department Head in 2024, then Associate Dean for the Biological, Physical and Mathematical Sciences in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences in 2026. The lab uses structural, analytical and cellular approaches to define how carbohydrates regulate cell-mediated immune responses elicited by antibodies.
