Medical work at Sanquin – Care for the donor, safety for the patient
As a medical professional at Sanquin, you make a difference every day – for donors and for patients.
In the Netherlands, Sanquin is responsible for the blood supply. Thanks to our collaboration with hundreds of thousands of dedicated donors, we ensure that patients receive the blood products they need. Safe donations and optimal care for both donors and patients – that’s what we stand for.
At our blood collection locations across the country, our donor physicians are the first medical point of contact. They assess whether someone can donate safely and closely monitor the donor’s health. Our blood collection specialists provide a warm welcome, guide the donation process, and perform medical checks. Together, they ensure a safe, responsible donation – and a positive experience for the donor.
Medical expertise with social impact
Our transfusion physicians work closely with hospitals, doctors, and pharmacists. They advise on complex transfusion issues and ensure the right blood product reaches the right patient. Their work is a combination of medical and logistical precision – with a direct impact on treatment outcomes.
A unique field with many benefits
Working as a medical professional at Sanquin is different from many other healthcare settings:
- You mostly work with healthy individuals – our donors.
- You work during the day, occasionally in the evening, and sometimes on Saturdays. Never on Sundays or public holidays.
- Your work carries medical responsibility but is physically less demanding than clinical care.
- You enjoy a good work-life balance and a friendly atmosphere in close-knit teams.
Training and development
Sanquin is the only organization in the Netherlands offering training to become a Donor Physician for BIG-registered medical doctors. New doctors receive full training and the opportunity to grow further.
Our blood collection staff often have a background in nursing, individual healthcare (IG), medical assisting, or dental assisting. Every new blood collection employee also receives internal training from Sanquin
Meaningful, responsible, and people-centered work
You build relationships with donors, contribute to life-saving care, and work in a professional organization recognized worldwide as a leader in blood transfusion.
Do you want to provide care with social impact? Then Sanquin is the place for you.
