Donating Umbilical cord blood

At Sanquin, we supply blood and plasma for transfusions to patients. But Sanquin does more. It is also possible to donate umbilical cord blood through Sanquin. Umbilical cord blood is especially beneficial for patients who have difficulty finding a suitable adult donor or who need a transplant quickly—particularly infants, children, and, in specific cases, adults.

Are you pregnant and considering donating your baby’s cord blood? Then please read the information below carefully. Please note that umbilical cord blood donation is possible in a hospital or birth center that collaborates with Sanquin. You must register in advance with the hospital or birth center.

Who am I helping?

Umbilical cord blood contains a relatively high number of stem cells, which can offer children and adults with serious blood disorders—such as leukemia—a chance at recovery. Worldwide, more than 35,000 transplants have already been performed using stem cells from umbilical cord blood stored in public banks.

How does it work?

Umbilical cord blood is collected after the baby is born and the umbilical cord has been cut. This process is completely painless and risk-free. The care of mother and child always comes first.
Not everyone can donate umbilical cord blood. Donation is only possible if you give birth at one of the following hospitals: Bravis Hospital in Bergen op Zoom, Reinier de Graaf Hospital in Delft, or OLVG East in Amsterdam.

Stem cells from umbilical cord blood can save lives.

When is it not possible?

  • If you do not wish to be informed about blood test results that may be important for your or your child’s health.
  • If you do not consent to the indefinite storage of your or your child’s data and blood.
  • If the biological father's information is unknown, unless the child was conceived through a recognized sperm bank.
  • If you or the biological father has a disease or condition that could be transmitted through the umbilical cord blood.
