World Blood Donor Day 2016

Imagine that the people who you saved know who you are

World Blood Donor Day (WBDD)

In 2004 the World Health Organization (WHO) named 14 June as World Blood Donor Day. On this day - one of the WHO's eight international health days - voluntary and unpaid blood donation is spotlighted worldwide. Donors give patients a chance at recovering their health, staying healthy or improving their quality of life.

World Blood Donor Day 2016

This year (2016) is a special year for the Netherlands. His Majesty the King officially opened World Blood Donor Day in Amsterdam on Tuesday, 14 June. This year the Netherlands was the host country (every year a different country is selected), and Sanquin organised the opening.

One in four Dutch people will need blood at some point in their life. The Netherlands has almost 400,000 volunteer blood donors who provide this blood. They are honoured, along with all blood donors worldwide, on World Blood Donor Day.

"Imagine that the people who you saved know who you are"

We launched a very special campaign in honour of World Blood Donor Day 2016. Sanquin created this campaign in cooperation with the WHO. You can read news about the campaign on our 'Wall of Fame' at #ikgeefbloed (#igiveblood). During the campaign we are showcasing coincidental meetings in everyday settings where donors meets patients in a magical way. During these chance meetings the patients recognise the donors and have the opportunity to thank them.

Are you already a donor? Then thank you for your donation!
