• Are you male or female?

  • Are you between 18 and 65 years of age?

  • Unfortunately, you cannot become a blood donor.

In the Netherlands, someone between 18 and 65 years of age can register as a donor. A person of this age can normally donate half a liter of blood hassle-free. The chance of complications increases with people older than 79 years of age. In other words, the health of donors could be at stake, and we do not wish a donor to be at risk. Aren’t you 18 years old yet? Then, unfortunately you cannot register as a donor yet. However, we appreciate your interest in giving blood. Therefore, we hope that you will sign up again once you turn 18.

  • Do you weigh less than 50 kilograms?

  • Unfortunately, you cannot become a blood donor.

We are allowed to collect only 16% of blood from the total blood volume. Otherwise, the health of the donor may be put at risk. Is this only temporary and do you expect to gain some weight, then please sign up once you have gained weight again. If you’re just not that heavy and still want to help us, please tell people you know about donating blood. Thank you for your interest in donating blood!

  • Have you received a blood transfusion or been treated with blood products (this includes platelets or plasma) since 1st January 1980?

  • Unfortunately, you cannot become a blood donor.

Because you have received a blood transfusion, out of precaution, you cannot register as a donor. This is in order to prevent an infection chain with the variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. There is no test available with which this disease can be detected in humans. Thank you for your interest in donating blood!

  • Have you ever received an organ or tissue transplant?

  • Unfortunately, you cannot become a blood donor.

A variant of the Creutzfeldt-Jakob (vCJD) disease was discovered in people in 1996. This brain disease is probably caused by eating contaminated beef from cows with BSE (the ‘mad cow disease’). It has also been demonstrated that the vCJD variant can be transmitted via a blood transfusion. There is no test available to detect vCJD in humans. That’s why people who could transfer the disease aren’t allowed to become a donor, even if the chance of transferring the disease is really small. Thank you for interest in becoming a donor!

  • Did you spend a total of six months or longer in the United Kingdom between 1st January 1980 and 31st December 1996?

  • Unfortunately, you cannot become a blood donor.

A variant of the Creutzfeldt-Jakob (vCJD) disease was discovered in people in 1996. This brain disease is probably caused by eating contaminated beef from cows with BSE (the ‘mad cow disease’). Most cases of vCJD so far have occurred in the United Kingdom. It has also been demonstrated that the vCJD variant can be transmitted via a blood transfusion. For this reason, people who spent six months or longer in the United Kingdom between 1st January 1980 and 31st December 1996 are not allowed to register as a blood donor. Thank you very much for your interest in becoming a donor!

  • Have you ever injected drugs?

  • Unfortunately, you cannot become a blood donor.

You cannot register as a donor if you ever injected drugs. Even if it was only once or a long time ago. Because of a higher risk of blood-borne infections you cannot give blood. If you have snorted cocaine, you are allowed to give blood four months after the last time you used cocaine. If you use cocaine once every four months or more often, you are not allowed to become a donor.

  • Do you have diabetes?

  • What kind of medicine do you use for your diabetes?

  • Unfortunately, you cannot become a blood donor.

If you don’t use any injections with insulin for the diabetes, but only tablets (and your medicine is set correctly) in the future, you can still become a blood donor later.

  • Do you have, or have you in the past suffered from, a chronic or serious illness?

  • Unfortunately, you cannot become a blood donor (yet).

We need some more information before we can say whether you can become a donor. Please call 088-730 8686 in order to discuss.
