You don’t know him, but you can save his life

Register as a blood donor

Thank you very much for registering as a blood donor. It's a wonderful gesture and good news for everyone who really needs your blood. As a first check whether it will be safe for you and for the patients, we ask you nine medical questions below.

At this stage we can only go through the commonest reasons why someone cannot be a donor. After registration, we will invite you for a medical screening interview [with a donor physician] including a blood test to determine whether it is possible for you to donate blood.

You cannot become a blood donor yet.

Because you are not 18 years old, unfortunately you cannot register as a donor yet. However, we appreciate your interest in giving blood and hope that you will sign up when you are 18.

Unfortunately you cannot register as a blood donor any more.

In the Netherlands, someone between 18 and 65 years of age can register as a donor. A person of this age can normally easily give a half liter of blood. The risk of complications increases  in older people and in the Netherlands donation is not permitted beyond the age of  70 years. Because of the possible health risks to donors we do not allow people of 64 and older to sign up and start donating.

Although you cannot become a donor any more, you can always help us by promoting Sanquin and encouraging your family and friends to think about enrolling. In this way you can indirectly save lives.

Thank you very much for your interest in becoming a donor!

Unfortunately you cannot become a blood donor.

We are only allowed to remove up to 16% of the total blood volume. Otherwise the health of the donor could be put at risk. If you are only temporarily lighter than 50 kilograms, please sign up when you have put on weight again.

Are you simply not a heavy person? If you still want to help you can always do this by promoting Sanquin among your family and friends. In this way you can indirectly save lives.

Thank you very much for your interest in becoming a donor!

Unfortunately you cannot become a blood donor.

Because you have had a blood transfusion, you cannot register as a donor for precautionary reasons. This is in order to prevent an chain of infection with the variant form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. There is no test with which this disease can be detected in the blood of healthy donors.

Even though you cannot become a blood donor yourself, you can help us by promoting Sanquin among your family and friends.
In this way you can indirectly save lives.

You cannot become a blood donor.

This is to stop human-to-human transmission of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). This brain disease is probably caused by consumption of beef infected with BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy, ”mad cow disease”). There is no test to detect the presence of vCJD in a donor. For this reason, people who could potentially transmit the disease cannot become blood donors, even though the risk is very small.

NOTE: England, Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are all part of the United Kingdom.

A variant form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob (vCJD) disease was discovered in humans in 1996.
This brain disease is probably caused by eating contaminated beef from cows with BSE (‘mad cow disease’).

Most cases of vCJD have occurred in the United Kingdom. It has also been demonstrated that vCJD can be transmitted by a blood transfusion. For this reason, people who spent six months or longer in the United Kingdom between 1st January 1980 and 31st December 1996 are not allowed to register as a blood donor.

Unfortunately, you cannot become a blood donor.

You cannot register as a donor if you have ever injected drugs, even if it was only once or a long time ago. Because there is a higher risk of blood-borne infections you cannot give blood.
If you have snorted cocaine, you are allowed to give blood one year after the last time you used cocaine. If you use cocaine once a year or more often, you are not allowed to become a donor.

Unfortunately you cannot become a blood donor.

If your doctor says you will be able to stop using insulin injections and manage your diabetes with tablets in the future, you could become a blood donor later, once your diabetes has been stabilised with the tablets.

Even though you cannot become a blood donor yourself (right now), you can help us by promoting Sanquin among your family and friends. In this way you can indirectly save lives.
