Tom Swaak MD PhD

Tom Swaak is clinical rheumatologist who is not only involved in patient care but has also done a lot of basic research in the field of rheumatic diseases. He is member of the Department of Rheumatology of the Ikazia Hospital, Rotterdam and has authored 210 scientific publications.
In the past 20 years he also was consultant of the Department of Autoimmune Diseases of CLB (now Sanquin). In close co-operation with both departments, different laboratory assays were evaluated. Most of the research was related to the development and clinical evaluation of anti-nuclear antibody assays as well the role of cytokines in the inflammatory reaction.
His Department of Rheumatology has always had an active role in the development and conduction of clinical trials ( phase 1-3).
