Tetanus, cause and prevention

Do you want to help us combat tetanus? Get vaccinated against tetanus and become a plasma donor.

Only a small proportion (about 5%) of the Dutch population has enough antibodies against tetanus to qualify for anti-tetanus plasma donation. That is why the blood bank is looking for donors who are willing to be vaccinated against tetanus, so that the antibody levels in their blood increase.

What is tetanus?

Tetanus is caused by a bacteria found in soil and street dirt. In case of injury, such as a dog bite, the tetanus bacteria can enter the body. The bacteria makes a poison (tetanus toxin) that causes painful muscle cramps. It can also affect the respiratory muscles or the heart.

In the Netherlands, all children are vaccinated against tetanus. People who are at risk due to their job are also vaccinated preventively.

The protective effect of the vaccine decreases over time. People with an injury and a risk of infection with this bacteria are given antibodies against tetanus preventively.

What can your plasma do?

The antibodies in your plasma can be administered to people with an injury who are at risk of contamination with the tetanus bacteria.
